We are pleased to present our Company Annual Review for 2018, which celebrates the achievements of the Company and its managed services over the last year. Friends House, Swarthmoor Hall and the Quaker Centre Bookshop and Café all saw significant rises, and we continued to deliver high levels of customer service.
Reaching New Heights
The Company is owned by BYM, and all profits are gift-aided back to the charity. In 2018, we managed to gift-aid £1.27m to BYM, the highest amount we have ever raised. Friends House was also awarded the Bronze Best Venue Customer Service Award for 300+ delegates at the London Venue Awards, while the Facilities Team won a Platinum Loo of the Year Award for maintaining the high standards of out customer amenities.
Swarthmoor Hall also welcomed record levels of visitors to the Barn Café, which celebrated its third birthday in the Summer. The Quaker Centre Bookshop saw impressive growth of overseas sales online, rising by 20% in 2017.
Celebrating our Communities
The Company has a history of being involved with local communities, particularly when it comes to sustainability. 2018 marked the 10th anniversary of the Camden Climate Change Alliance, of which Friends House was a founding member. CEO Paul Grey attended the celebrations and received an award on the Company’s behalf for reducing the overall carbon footprint by 30% over the last 10 years.
The Bake the Difference Programme was launched in September, which supports participants with personality disorders who have a history of offending or anti-social behaviour. Participants learn practical and theoretical baking skills to help them find employment and help them reintegrate into society. Mauro Calheiros, who works with the participants says “Bake the Difference has already produced positive results for those on the course. Probation officers with participants have told us they have seen a marked improvement during their assessments. In some cases, participants’ medications have been reduced.”
New Year, New Name
In 2018, the Board of Trustees felt that the Company’s original name (Friends House (London) Limited) didn’t truly its reflect the aims and ethos. That’s why from now on, the Company will be known as Quiet Company. As a Quaker-run company, this name reflects the Company’s values of being welcoming, pioneering and responsible – with the spirit of hospitality at its heart.
